About the Services
Five services make up most of our year. Here’s what each one is and how long it runs. For what the Liturgy means, read The Orthodox Faith.
- 35–45 min Vespers Vespers (Greek for “Evening”) is a 35-to-45-minute service offered on Saturday evenings in preparation for the services on Sunday morning. Daily Vespers is a similar service offered on weekdays that is 25–35 minutes in length.
- 60–75 min Orthros Orthros (Greek for “Daybreak”) is a 60-to-75-minute service offered on Sunday mornings leading into the Divine Liturgy.
- about 75 min Divine Liturgy The Divine Liturgy (Liturgy is Greek for “the work/service of the people”) is our main worship service, centered on the reception of Holy Communion, offered on Sunday mornings. It is about 75 minutes in length.
- 45 min Paraklesis Paraklesis (Greek for “supplication”) is a 45-minute intercessory service offered to our Lord, His Mother, or a Saint for our living family, friends, neighbors, church, and town. Throughout the year, we offer weekly Paraklesis services to our Patron, St. George.
- 30–45 min Akathist The Akathist (Greek for “not seated”) is a 30-to-45-minute service of prayer offered in honor of our Lord, His Mother, a Saint, or a Feast Day.
